Submission Dates have been extended to January 15th to encourage more printmakers and bookmakers to participate, realizing the holiday season is so busy.
PROOF Studio Gallery is again pleased to host the 7th International Print Exhibition and Exchange – an opportunity for printmakers from anywhere in the world to connect with each other by exhibiting their print interpretation of the zodiac sign of the Chinese New Year. Artists from China, Mexico, Germany, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec and Ontario are participants for 2008 in this free exhibition and print exchange.
Each artist creates a limited edition especially for this show using a traditional print technique such as etching, wood block, linoblock, embossing, relief methods, silkscreen and mixed print media. The first print is used in the exchange, the second for fund raising for the exhibition and additional prints will be exchanged or offered for sale. Participation is free and funded by the exchange print supplied by each artist. For some artists this is their 7th year of participation and they are collecting some wonderful prints and printmaking contacts around the world. Printmakers of all ages are encouraged to participate and we have university, college and high school students also involved!
How the Print Exhibition and Exchange Got Started
In the fall of 2001, Sheila Jonah of Proof Studio Gallery in Toronto and Karen Cornelius of KC Print Studio in Winnipeg traveled to Xian, China and spent 5 weeks working with the Printmaking Department in Xian University of Fine Arts. Chinese students and printmaking professors were keen to exhibit in Canada and also very interested to see examples of techniques from Canadian printmakers.
The idea for the International Print Exhibition was sparked by Sheila Jonah and initially organized by Karen Cornelius out of Winnipeg for the first 5 years and in Toronto by Sheila Jonah. Exhibitions occurred yearly at the Ottawa School of Art, Ontario College of Art and Design and in Winnipeg. Xian University of Fine Arts in China and Schorndorf Town Hall in Germany also hosted exhibitions. This is the second year PROOF Studio Gallery in Toronto Canada supports printmaking by offering their space for the Year of the Rat exhibition.
